St. Louis, MO Day 5

Today, we went to the St. Louis Zoo. It was a big zoo. Unfortunately, many of the animals were at the vet barn. Ok, not every animal but enough we got through the zoo faster. Since it is October, they were celebrating Octoberfest! They had a number of beer trailers throughout the park. All different brands but more just Missouri brands or others that were popular. Budweiser, Sam Adams and Blue moon to name a few. I wish the KC zoo did more stuff like that. They had a very good kids play area and playgrounds. Ether way, we all had fun. It’s worth visiting. It is an all day thing.

For dinner we just stayed in and ordered pizza. We wanted to try something we didn’t have back home like Pizza Hut, Papa Johns or dominos pizza. We wanted local. So, we had Imo’s pizza. It was very good. I would eat there again.

St. Louis, Missouri Day 4

Today we decided to go a place called Grants Farm. It’s a fun place. The Busch family owns the farm. This also where they do some of not all the breading for the Budweiser Clydesdales.

You take a tram ride through the beginning and it’s a number of acres with animals free to roam. No real rhyme or reason. Just animals free to roam. It’s sort of like a zoo but no quite. Lots of animals, more just farm animals. Many of them you can pet. They had a eating area that sold German style bratwurst. They also gave two free samples of beer. And not just a 2-4 ounce sample. It was a full glass.

For dinner we went back to the Broadway Oyster Bar. Food was even better. We got the fried Oysters and the shrimp as appetizers and then had entrees. Food was worth checking out. They have live music there sometimes.

At the bar/restaurant had a musician named Jackson Stokes. He was a good musician and really nice. Jackson has an album on ITunes.

St. Louis, Missouri Day 3

Today we went to The National Transportation Museum. Much of the museum was all old trains and cars. I am not a car guy necessarily, but their car selection was not big. But to be fair they operate on donations and volunteer help. So there is only so much they can do but…. it was nice to see some of the cars in person. Many of them were early 20th century cars/trucks. You could tour many of the train cars and take a trolly ride. They also a discover center for kids. This area was like day care but our daughter had fun. That’s all that mattered.

For lunch we went to Red Robin. It’s a good burger chain. I would recommend it if you have one in your city or visiting a city with one. But some people prefer more local places that aren’t chains.

After lunch we went to the St. Louis Arch. If you do not like tight spaces or heights this is not the place for you. My wife and mother in law stayed at the bottom as neither of them cared for heights. My daughter had a good time. The heights did not seem to bother her but the waiting did.

For dinner we ate at the The Shaved Duck. The food was ok. It was also a small venue. Maybe my expectations were too high being from Kansas City. They had live music which was nice.

St. Louis, Missouri Day 2

This morning we went to City Museum. It is a kids museum. Local artists are given areas they can work and it all has that industrial art look. There are a lot of areas that are meant for kids to climb on and in. Many of them look like an industrial forest and/or a dinosaur. They even has play sculptures outside with old planes they can climb in and fire trucks and huge outdoor ball pits. They have a little circus in there as well, where they have a one woman show. Our daughter is two years old and loved watching her perform. Much if it was just a performance piece but with a twist of acrobats. We ate lunch there since my wife had seen on the Kansas City news as a popular place to eat. The food was really good.

For dinner we went to the Broadway Oyster Bar. The food was really good. They have won many awards for seafood and Cajun/creole. Highly recommend it. It is close to Busch Stadium. Also, close to the St. Louis Arch. So if you are catching a game give it a try. They had live music, so we sat outside after dinner and let our daughter listen tell about 7:30 pm.

St. Louis, Missouri Day 1/2

This week we are on vacation with my in-laws. My wife and mother in law decided they wanted to go to St. Louis, Missouri. We left around 10:30 am. We drove for maybe an hour and a half and stopped for lunch at Arby’s. Needles to say say not my favorite place to eat… but it could have been worse and it was for the greater good.

Once we were back on the road we stopped at O’ Fallen Brewery. They make a seasonal pumpkin beer that is very good. They have other flavor variations of the pumpkin beer. The pretzels we had were really good. So we decided to stop by and sample some other beers. We tried almost all over the beers they had on tap and some starter plates to try. And of course bought beer to take to the AIRBNB we rented.

When we arrived at the rental house; we realized we were in a rough neighborhood. It was a very nice house in a historic building and in a historic neighborhood. Not like founding fathers historic but still historic int its own right. When we unloaded the truck and took everything upstairs we realize it was very hot upstairs. It had been set to 89 degrees and it was 98 degrees outside. So we turned it down and went to dinner.

For dinner we went to The Vine Mediterranean Cafe. The cafe was maybe a five minute walk from were we were staying. We walked there a little before it got dark. The service was not great, we had to track down the waiter a few times to place our order. The staff was knowledgeable but that only goes so far. They messed up our order a little. Soup instead of salad. But we dealt with it. The food was over cooked. Chicken was very dry and rice was crunchy. So we finished the food that was edible and paid the bill and left.

At this point it was dark out. While we were waiting for dinner my mother in law took our daughter down the street and saw a couple performing life music. Mostly, guitar and singing. So after dinner we went back and watched some more. We let our daughter put a couple dollars in their tip guitar case. Our daughter loves the music and was dancing and was having fun. But like typical city with high crime we had a close call and almost got my wife’s purse.

So… the story. There were a group of two people trying to steal our stuff. A woman started hovering around my wife and standing behind her and not paying attention to the music or clapping when the song was over. When I walked over she walked away saying she didn’t have time for this. There was another man standing on the far side of the group where my step father was standing and playing with a toy fishing rod to try and draw our daughter over in order to get me to step away from my wife. So we walked off and they started following us down the street. We crossed over and we looked back to see where they were. They started yelling “What are you f**kers looking at”. So we kept walking and started turning the corner to our street. We noticed they had crossed the street and were walking towards us. So we turned around and I took us down an alley. Yes! It was a dark alley. But! It was dark and I wasn’t worried about them seeing us down there. Our daughter was feeling our because it was dark. I just wanted to make it back to the house.

We made it back to the house and it was about nine o’clock pm. Gave our daughter a bath and opened the windows, as it was still over 85 degrees. We were all in bed, sweating, and heard several gun shots. So,all and all it was an interesting night.
