Back in 2005 I went to Italy with my family. We started in Rome for 5 and 1/2 days then took the train to Naples for 4 days. We went because one of my uncles is an Art Professor in the Norfolk, Virginia and goes every year. During that time we saw a lot if historical sites thrown in with a lot of shopping mostly for the parental units. Much of Rome was a cookie cutter blocks. They would have a men’s clothing store, women’s purse/glove store and then a cafe/restuaruant/CVS with very little variation in between. While in Naples we took a day trip to Herculaneum and Pompeii. There were a number of was you can get there we managed to find a good deal for 70 dollars for 4 people for a personal driver all day. You will need the better part of a day to go through both ancient cities. They are both worth seeing. If you only have a few days in the area I would clear your schedule to do this. The food was ok in Rome but the best food was always at actual sit down restaurants. We actually went to a cafeteria while on our day trip I Pompeii and Herculaneum and it was actually the best food we had while in Rome (our in the visinity).
